24 Hours in… Glasgow!

So this past Bank Holiday Weekend, Alex and I got impulsive! We had an itch to get out of little ol’ Dumfries and see something new! Because we only had one night to play with, we decided to hop on a bus and go to the nearest big city – Glasgow! The X74 bus from Dumfries is only 2 hours, though don’t be a knob like me and make sure you check the schedule or you will end up waiting around for an extra 2 hours because you were looking at the wrong day… Opps!

We still managed to arrive at a decent hour in the early afternoon, quickly headed to the hostel to check in, and then set out to explore! Now, this list is obviously not exhaustive and in all reality is far less than you can actually see in 24 hours; however, we were also running around wedding shopping so couldn’t simply be tourists!

What we managed to fit in:

  • Euro Hostel Glasgow – seriously, I know there are a lot of people who are hesitant to stay at hostels but this place is like a mini hotel! Absolutely amazing!
  • Drygate Brewery – Wicked tour! Great venue! I can’t rave enough about this place! You have to try the Ax Man Rye IPA!
  • The Raven – fantastic smokehouse with some wicked craft beers! So good, in fact, that I had to come back (I had come here last time I was in Glasgow as well!).
  • The Piper Whiskey Bar – didn’t have a whiskey menu (which I found odd for a whiskey bar…) and not a great selection but they did have live music!
  • The Lighthouse – I know we should have taken more time to check out the actual exhibitions, but all we had time for was climbing up the spiral stairs to get a great view of Glasgow from the top! Def worth the steps 😉
  • Shilling Brewing Co.  – This was a great little micro brewery! We taste tested most of their beers and our favourites were definitely the Cliffhanger and the Tesselation!
  • Gallery of Modern Art (but not really) – we didn’t get a chance to go in this time, but it was hard to miss the famous Duke of Wellington and his hat! This guy is an iconic image of Glasgow and now his horse has the fashionable accessory as well!
  • Street Art  – it is hard not to be impressed with the stunning art littering Glasgow’s walls! I’d really like to find the time to do a proper walking tour – The City Centre Mural Trail seems like a good place to start exploring!
  • Merchant Square – Always beautiful! Though I would have preferred to make it to the market. However, I did get to see it when I was in Glasgow briefly last year before hiking the West Highland Way and it was amazing!

Next time we make it to Glasgow, these places are top of my list!

  • Gallery of Modern Art (properly…)
  • Brew Dog, West, and Clockwork breweries
  • Oran Mor whiskey bar
  • Wander through the West End
  • Kelvingrove Museum
  • Barras Market
  • Merchant Square on market day!

We cannot wait to go back again and with it so close, I can see Glasgow becoming a favourite weekend getaway! What are you favourite places in Glasgow??
